It was a long cherished plan to restart the work of the India Christian Mission in the State of West Bengal.
The Founder of the Mission has started walking over the roads of the State of West Bengal and working for the poor and needy during the year 1898 and one, Honourable K.C.Bannerjee, then Member of Bengal Legislative Assembly has worked as its Hon.Treasurer from 1898. The founders family has resided on the hills of Darjeeling for some time and over viewed the work of ICM in West Bengal. During 1990, the ICM has founded a HOME FOR THE HOMELESS at No.33, Amherst Street, Calcutta under the leadership of its Representative Bro.Anand Mohon Biswas. Then the work in the East Coast was entrusted to Bro.J.McLeod and the Founder moved to Eluru field in Andhra Pradesh. After some time the ICM work was weakened and closed due to non availability of Missionaries to work in West Bengal.
After a great deal of the matters and deliberations with Rev.Fr.Wallace Crowford and Bro.Peter Sukumar Mondal for around One and half years, the Governing Body of the Episcopal Missionary Diocese of Eluru has resolved for formulating the Diocese of West Bengal under the leadership of Rev.Fr.Wallace Crowford. He has proposed to join the ICM Church as his Primate at Canada passed away and the jurisdiction became vacant. But after some time, a new Primate has taken over the charge and Fr.Wallace wishes to retain with his old jurisdiction. The Primate of the ICM Church has issued the Decree for bifurcation of the State of West Bengal from the Episcopal Missionary Diocese of Eluru.
Then the application received from Rev.Fr.Augustine Sukumar Sarkar was accepted after a thorough interview at the Primatial SEE of Eluru being present before the Primate and the Committee on 21 st May 2013. He was incardinated into the ICM Church and after perusing his credentials and the service, Rev.Fr.Augustine Sukumar Sarkas was appointed as the first Bishop for the Diocese of West Bengal of the India Christian Mission Church and was Consecrated on the 11 th July 2013 by His Graces The Most Revd.Dr.John SDR Nakka, The Most Revd.Dr.A.John Sathiya Kumar and The Most Rev.Dr.Duraisingh James at Calcutta.
We request all the viewers to pray for this young diocese.
